Conference strands were:
Preparing Females to Persevere in STEM – Connections with universities and industry; what do they wish females knew beyond academics?
STEM+ – Connections with STEM and all disciplines, including art, foreign language, English/Language Arts, history, computer science etc. in both formal and informal learning
STEM Learning in Diverse Communities – Connections within the diverse sub-groups that make up our female learners, from different racial and ethnic groups to socio-economic status
What is STEM?
The United States is the first nation to land on the moon and the nation which developed the polio vaccine and invented the light bulb. After decades of dominance in the scientific fields, American schools and universities must work to ensure that our country remains competitive in the STEM fields. Women are underrepresented in these fields, comprising only 26 percent of mathematical and computer scientists, and 11 percent of engineers.
The Center for STEM Education for Girls was formed to increase participation by girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math studies in high school and college and to encourage them to aspire to STEM careers.
The Think Tank and Conference brings together national leaders in K12 education for girls and young women (independent, public, charter, and parochial), university K12 outreach
coordinators and researchers, leaders of successful university STEM programs, girls' informal educators, and members of industry
